ABSTRACT With the recent emphasis on primary health care in New Zealand, it is conceivable that the rehabilitation of people with stroke will become progressively more community-based, with less time spent on in-patient rehabilitation. With this in mind, this paper reviews current literature on stroke rehabilitation in the community and debates the issue as to whether it is truly community-based or just merely an extension of institutionalised care.
